About Viloma

Kalpana is a young artist from the Indian state of Kashmir, who is blessed with an unusual talent that she has painstakingly learned from her aging guru.

As her hand creates an artistic image on paper, a second meaningful picture miraculously materialises when the picture is rotated, depicting the antithesis of the first image, and invoking an ancient Hindu belief that life is full of dualities.

Urged by her guru to share this talent and its underlying message with the world, young Kalpana enters her “reversible creations” in an international art contest ... with surprising results.

The story is told by an invisible guardian angel through an impressive and unparalleled collection of “reversible” images that take the viewer by surprise at every rotation. This is a moving narrative about the young artist Kalpana, of the message behind her unique and tantalizing talent, and of her journey halfway around the world.

VILOMA is an ingenious showcase for an unprecedented art form that expresses in pictorial form the Indian philosophy of transmigration of the soul. The “wowing” series of reversible images occupying centre stage in the film have been described by Dr. Al Seckel, Cognitive Neurologist at Caltech, as the “very best and most original examples of this type of illusion”. Each image, as it rotates to reveal its upside down counterpart, unexpectedly reveals dual perspectives through a single drawing, a testimony to an uncommon vision and mastery. The art embodies sensuous, but highly controlled, strokes that create an original, artistic and playful movement inspired by the idea of duality. The artwork has already earned accolades from leading art critics and artists from the United States, UK and India, described as a catalyst for reflection upon fresh ideas for a new, artistic platform. It has been featured in several books, including one in which “reversible” poems accompany the topsy-turvy drawings.

VILOMA the film has been creating a stir across the globe as it makes its way through the film festival circuit. Each image rotation has attracted applause, as audiences express their surprise and incredulity upon discovering the unexpected duality and the magical transformation.

I have spent ten years perfecting this art. In the laborious process of creating such images, each change introduced to one side made it necessary to check and refine the opposite side. The challenge of creating lines that have meaning on both sides of the picture, in each part and in the whole, was filled with the agonies of trial and error, indeed a supreme test of patience. As I gradually and painstakingly honed my ability to sculpt pairs of meaningful images at an artistically mature level, I realized that I had laid my hands on a powerful magic that would allow me to fuse two different concepts into one set of lines and deliver a strong visual impact.

The making of the film attracted artistic and creative talents in several disciplines, including an original musical score by accomplished and renowned Indian artist Dalip Langoo and his team, and the writing talent of Satish Rao - erstwhile associate of internationally famed Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal - who edited the script for the big screen.

The film is an art form not currently taught in any school in the world, and carries potential beyond film making: kids learning this new art form in art schools to expand their visualising faculties; commercial uses such as rotating ads, rotating art in executive boardrooms, lobbies and libraries, and so on. It introduces fun and a sense of magic in the viewing of art, stimulating the viewers' senses in a way not previously possible, teasing the audience into a challenge of guessing each “new” image that will emerge.

VILOMA is a new arrival on the leading edge of film making, offering moviegoers new experiences that can be thrilling and illuminating, and introducing a new ideal for film-makers to strive for.

Director and his Art

Hailing from India I came to Canada in 1965 on Commonwealth Scholarship for further studies. Architect by profession, artist at heart, my artwork is showcased in prestigious publications in Canada, USA and India.

I developed a new art-form in which images can be viewed straight as well as upside down. Based on this unique concept, I created a 60 min. art film titled, ‘VILOMA...discovery in duality’. It was screened at The Buffalo International Film Festival (April 2015) and has won several International awards.

‘KUNTAL KALA” explores the practical application of the above art as applied to interior design and advertisement in today’s world.
